Mumbai would have got their third wicket had Nehal Wadera misjudged Marcus Stoinis' catch while running from deep cover in the fifth over. From there, Stoinis dropped Cameron Green for four before pulling Hrithik Shouken twice through square leg and midwicket.
He followed it up with straight sixes as 18 runs came off the last over of the power-play. But he was losing support from the other end as he was dismissed to Piyush Chawla's long-on in the ninth over.
Madhawal's return in the 10th over really broke the game open for Mumbai - Ayush Badoni's off-stump was sent on a cartwheel trip, and then Nicholas Puran fell for a golden duck.
Stoinis was run out after colliding with Deepak Hooda while taking the second run, and Krishnappa Gowtham also fell in similar fashion. Madhwal caught Ravi Vishnu at long-on before Hooda was run out before another terrific combination. Madhabwal completed his five-for by hitting the base of Mohsin Khan's off-stump to seal an emphatic win for Mumbai.
Earlier, Mumbai looked all set for a 200-plus total, racing to 98/2 at the halfway mark. But Naveen-ul-Haq used his slower deliveries to pick 4/38 to hold off Mumbai's charge, with Yash Thakur and Mohsin Khan taking 3/34 and 1/24 respectively.
As Mumbai were on a flying start, Ishan Kishan twice steered through the third-man region using late cuts to collect three boundaries, while Rohit Sharma hit a six over long-on to sweep four against Krunal in Gotham.
Lucknow got the breakthrough when Rohit lofted from his crease, but hit Naveen straight to extra cover, falling behind after trying to cut Kishan Thakur. Green was up and running immediately with four cuts and was lucky to get another boundary from the outside edge.
He feasted on a full and short ball from Krunal to hit three beautiful boundaries, then timed his drive in the gap between mid-off and covered for another four. Sunkumar, who got off the mark with a rampaging six from Thakur in the powerplay, repeated Mohsin's shot for the same result and pulled the green pacer for another maximum.
Naveen delivered the knockout punch in the 11th over - an off-cutter forced Suryakumar to dig to long-on, followed by another slower delivery that went through the green gate. It slowed down as Mumbai managed just 26 runs from the next four overs, although Tilak launched Bishnu for a massive six over deep midwicket.
Tilak pulled Naveen for six before the team joined the party with a square-drive from David Thakur. But Mumbai had another slow start as David Thakur was dismissed by a full toss, followed by Tilak getting out from Naveen in similar fashion.
Wadera swept Thakur for two fours and pulled six over deep square leg to take Mumbai to 180, before falling to the deep on the last ball of the innings, enough for the five-time champions to keep their dreams of a final alive.
