Man dies, wife survives after car skids in Taldanda canal


Cuttack: One Giana Ranjan Jena died after his car fell into the Taldanda Canal here on Monday. Jena's wife Anjana narrowly survived and is being treated in hospital.

Jena, a resident of Kandarpur, lived with her family in a rented house in Sartol. Today, while returning to Sartol from a private hospital in the CDA, Jena took a shortcut to the Taldanda Canal which is under construction for renovation.

After traveling some distance, he saw that the road was closed for construction Now Jenna decided to take the main road for which she started reversing the car

However, due to lack of space, the car skidded and rolled about 35 feet down into the canal which had water in it, leading to the accident.

Jena and his wife were rescued by the police with the help of locals and admitted to SCB Medical College and Hospital where they were declared brought dead.

A couple went to a private hospital for Anjana's knee surgery and on their way back they stopped at a bank near College Street to withdraw Rs 2 lakh.

The car was recovered from the canal and cash was handed over to the family members of the deceased. Meanwhile, the incident sparked outrage among the people of Cuttack who blamed the officials for the accident.

“There is no sign informing the commuters that the road is closed and construction work is going on. If they had been prevented from taking this route, the man would not have died, said local people.

The Police Commissionerate registered a case of unnatural death and sent the body for post-mortem.
