Odisha Government Prepares for Potential Flood Situation
In response to an Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast predicting intense rainfall due to an active monsoon, the Odisha government has issued directives to district collectors and municipal commissioners to be prepared for possible floods. Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) Satyabrata Sahu emphasized the need for immediate action to address potential flash floods, waterlogging, and landslides.
Strategic Measures
Field-Level Deployment: Officials are instructed to remain at their headquarters and be strategically positioned in areas prone to flash floods or waterlogging. This ensures rapid response to any emergency situations that may arise.
Urban Drainage Systems: Urban local bodies (ULBs) are tasked with keeping drainage systems and storm water channels decongested. Adequate dewatering pumps must be deployed to manage excess water and prevent waterlogging, especially in low-lying areas.
Road and Safety Measures: In the event of very heavy rainfall, the movement of vehicles on submerged roads should be regulated. Residents in vulnerable low-lying areas may need to be temporarily relocated to safer locations.
Infrastructure Preparedness: The SRC has called for the pre-positioning of water pumps with generators in areas susceptible to waterlogging. Additionally, there should be vigilant supervision of weak and vulnerable points in river and canal embankments. Pre-positioned flood-fighting materials will ensure prompt action to prevent breaches and other flood-related damages.
Drainage Clearance: Ensuring the clearance of drainage systems is critical for the free flow of rainwater, reducing the risk of water accumulation and subsequent flooding.

The IMD's Bhubaneswar Centre has issued a bulletin predicting heavy rainfall on June 26 in the districts of Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Gajapati, Kandhamal, Rayagada, Kalahandi, and Koraput. Additionally, thunderstorms and lightning are expected in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, and Gajapati.
