Sources said the wild elephant roamed the area for more than an hour before the panicked residents headed towards Salia Sahi Basti in Bhubaneswar.

Residents of Bhubaneswar's Matri Bihar were in a state of panic when a wild elephant entered the area on Sunday night.

According to reports, Tutsi entered Bhubaneswar city from Chandaka sanctuary via Bharatpur.

Sources said the wild elephant roamed the area for more than an hour before the panicked residents headed towards Salia Sahi Basti in Bhubaneswar.

After an hour's effort by the forest department officials and the police, the pachyderm finally left the city.

It is worth mentioning here that the trenches dug in Chandaka Wildlife Sanctuary to prevent elephants from entering Bhubaneswar have been filled in many places. The border wall built for elephants has also been breached at many places, allowing elephants to enter Bhubaneswar.

Cases of elephant attacks have increased in Bhubaneswar in the last few years. In November last year, a wild elephant was spotted roaming around the premises of Lingaraj temple in Bhubaneswar.

Similarly, on March 24 this year, a herd of four elephants in Bhubaneswar's Shikhar Chandi Hills sent local residents into a state of panic.
